The course materials include syllabi, reading lists, lectures and notes, laboratory exercises and notes, examinations, student papers, and doctoral examinations. The materials documenting Howland's work as a consultant include consulting work for Bear Creek Mining Company, Minneapolis, Minnesota; Rockford Blacktop Construction Company, Love Park, Illinois; Molten Metal Engineering Company, Hinsdale, Illinois; U.S. Gypsum Company, Chicago; Armour Research Foundation of the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago; Anson Mining, New Mexico; Harza Engineering Company; and several other firms. Most of the research material pertains to the Stillwater Complex in Sweet Grass County, Montana.
